A Miami man doing some Saturday night fishing in the Florida Keys wound up spending the night in jail after, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said, a deputy got a look at his catch.
According to MCSO, Lower Keys Marine Deputy Luis Guiardinu was patrolling at Bahia Honda State Park around 8:30 p.m. when he came upon fisherman Lazaro Morales. The deputy asked Morales if he’d caught any fish. Morales said he hadn’t. MCSO said Guiardinu found a dead tarpon in the bed of Morales’ pickup truck.
“Tarpon over 40 inches MUST remain in the water unless in pursuit of a state or world record using a tarpon tag.” the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission says. “Tarpon is a catch-and-release only fishery. One tarpon tag per person per year may be purchased when in pursuit of a Florida state or world record.”
Morales was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of illegally harvesting tarpon.
