PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A Port St. Lucie family is demanding answers from St. Lucie Public Schools after two separate school bus incidents involving their children.
Cynthia and Justin DeMond are raising questions about student safety and transportation procedures at St. Lucie West K-8.
The couple says what happened on two school bus rides this fall has left their children afraid to get back on the bus.
“It’s not a safe situation,” said Cynthia DeMond. “We don’t feel comfortable, and our children definitely don’t feel comfortable being on the bus. So we are just looking for answers.”
Their concerns began on Sept. 23.
According to the family, their 9-year-old daughter Naomi was riding home from St. Lucie West K-8 when the school bus went off the road, over a curb and into a ditch. The parents say Naomi hit her head on a window during the incident, leaving her with a bump and bruise above her eye.
“She was getting off the bus bawling, crying. She was obviously very upset,” Justin DeMond said.
Two weeks later, on Oct. 6, the couple says both of their daughters were riding home on the bus during heavy rain and flooding in the area.
They say the bus became stranded and took on water. Despite that, the DeMonds say the driver would not allow students off the bus for hours.
“The kids were screaming, ‘That’s my dad,’ Cynthia DeMond said. “There were other kids on the bus chanting, ‘Let us out,’ jumping out of the back door of the bus when all of this was happening.”
Justin DeMond said he waded through feet of floodwater to reach his kids. As he pulled them off the bus, he said he had a confrontation with the bus driver.
“As I open the door, he throws a kick through the door and tries to kick me in the chest,” he said. “There were kids going crazy, jumping around. It was not even safe. They were terrified.”

The couple says they repeatedly called and emailed school leaders and district officials seeking answers and requesting to review bus camera video.
“We have no answers to anything,” said Cynthia DeMond. “Not one person has called us back. Not one person has given us an answer.”
The family says they plan to keep pushing for changes and transparency about whether proper safety procedures were followed.
“I think there’s something seriously wrong with how they’re addressing a very reportable situation,” Justin DeMond said.
CBS12 has reached out to St. Lucie Public Schools regarding both incidents, the status of any investigation, and whether any action is being taken concerning the bus driver or district safety procedures.
As soon as we receive a response, this story will be updated.
