London-born, Stockholm-based singer-songwriter Orlando Hotopf returns to the blog with “I Got You,” a song that explores how a single traumatic moment can permanently change the meaning of love, innocence, and being alive.
“I Got You” gets started with the strums of an acoustic guitar, warmly saturated in overdriven tubes to add some bite. A subtle rhythm kicks in after a couple of bars, with Hotopf’s vocal soon falling into place, carrying that same gritty, lo-fi energy. The retro-tinged aesthetic is immediately apparent, and we were already hooked by the ten-second mark.
By the time the chorus arrives, “I Got You” slips into more of a modern sense of production, with a fleshed-out beat and deep bass that allow it to naturally ebb and flow with the verse sections. Additional vocal layers drift into position, bringing a sincerity that makes you believe the words when you hear, “But I got you and that’s all right.”
“I Got You” is bound to resonate with listeners across multiple genres. It’s got all the necessary ingredients to win the interest of folk fans, but there’s a great deal of contemporary production magic that will appeal to indie pop enthusiasts.
