TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County commissioners will hold a workshop Tuesday to discuss fire rescue services.
This comes after county leaders requested a state audit of the Tallahassee Fire Assessment Program last week, following an independent report that found alleged overspending and revenue shortfalls.
At Tuesday’s workshop, commissioners will receive a comprehensive evaluation of fire services, followed by staff recommendations.
Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban says one recommendation is for the county administrator to pursue what’s called a “dual track process,” meaning two options would be explored at the same time.
Caban says that includes renegotiating with the city, if it addresses the county’s concerns and meets its specific requests.
“One, we renegotiate with the city if, the keyword is if they get their house in order, there’s a list of items in the agenda item that talks about things the city will have to do to get their house in order for us to be able to come back to the table and work with them,” Caban said.

At the same time, Caban says commissioners will discuss preparing to have their own fire department.
He said the goal of the workshop is to give commissioners time to ask questions, make sure the public fully understands what’s happening, and give staff clear direction moving forward.
“So right now our board, we’ve been doing our homework through the independent review, and having our consultants look at what it would cost to have our own fire department and we want to also know, we wanted to confirm that what the city was imposing was not fair and just, we have that now. So this workshop is about giving our staff clear direction moving forward,” Caban said.
WCTV reached out to the city for comment Monday and had not heard back as of this report.
Commissioners will meet Tuesday at the Leon County Courthouse at 3 p.m. for the workshop.
