Watch to see if meteorologist Victoria Wisniewski can guess what is in these stereognostic boxes

Victoria WisniewskiORLANDO, Fla. —

October is Chemistry Month at the Science Center, and today we’re trying out stereognostic boxes. The boxes are designed to teach us about our tactile senses and kinesthetic memory, the body’s ability to remember and recognize through touch and movement.

“Whether it’s chemistry or any other science, observation skills are essential to the entire process,” Kaylee explained. The boxes are one way the Science Center helps guests build those skills.

In order to guess the contents, try to think of as many descriptive words as possible, such as textures and shapes. Careful, detailed observation is the first step of the scientific method.

You don’t need special equipment to practice your skills. Place a few similar household objects in a bag or box, reach in without peeking, and describe what you feel before guessing what each one is.
