A first time event is welcoming both families and four legged friends to a joint event hosted by The Sanibel School and the Sanibel Recreation Center this weekend.
The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at The Sanibel School, 3840 Sanibel Captiva Rd. The decorated trunks will be located on the far right side of the school closest to the ball field, and parking will be located on the left hand side of the school and at the Sanibel Recreation Center.
The event is free to attend. In case of rain, the event is scheduled to take place the following day, Sunday, Oct. 25.
The Sanibel School PTA President Samantha Britt said the Sanibel Recreation Center asked if the school wanted to partner with them regarding the Trunk or Treat portion of the event, as the Rec Center is hosting the Howl-O-Ween Costume Parade.
“We agreed,” she said.
As of last week there were an assortment of participants from families, to nonprofit organizations, and businesses to the Sanibel Police Department and Sanibel Fire & Rescue District who will have decorated trunks.
“There is a nice mix of attendees,” Britt said.
The goal was to reach 30 trunks for the event.
There are candy donation boxes set up at The Sanibel School, Sanibel Recreation Center and St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church for those willing and able to donate candy.
“The donations are to help our trunks if they under buy and run out. We can give them a bag or two,” she said.
Three awards will be given for the funniest and silliest trunk, spooky and scary trunk and best over all trunk. Judges will choose the winners. A basket full of goodies, including a gift card to local places from the island will be given to the winners.
There will be hot dogs, water, soda and popcorn available for purchase throughout the event. Kona Ice will also be on site.
The event will also feature the first Sanibel Recreation Center’s Howl-O-Ween Costume Parade.
Sanibel Recreation Center Marketing and Events Coordinator Denise Dillon said it’s a great way to involve the community with their pets, as some of the resident’s children have four legs.
“The pets and owners will be able to go around to the cars as well and collect pet friendly treats,” she said.
A little pet parade will begin around 3 p.m. and include a costume contest. Awards will be given to funniest costume, dynamic duo – owner/pet combination, and most creative.
All owners are requested to register their dog at https://app.seemylegacy.com/community/2787/campaign/9754/overview and fill out a wavier. There is no registration fee required.
