Police have identified 10 intersections in Port St. Lucie where they feel red light cameras would be beneficial to stop drivers from running red lights.
“At the PD, we are committed to leveraging technology wherever possible in order to multiply our force. Running a red light is a selfish act. It endangers the lives of other people,” said Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk.
“Let’s be honest. If we’re being totally truthful. Most of the crashes that we have and most of the problems we have are the result of bad driver behavior,” said Shannon Martin, Port St. Lucie Mayor and City Council member.
“Anything we can provide the police department with support to be able to help lessen the burden of the cost of additional officers and resources for traffic enforcement is not just a benefit for safety but it’s a benefit for the public overall,” said Jolien Caraballo, Vice-Mayor of Port St. Lucie and City Council member.
The Police Chief did not say during Monday’s City Council meeting how much the fine would be for those who are caught on camera running a red light.
According to the City of Port St. Lucie website, the red light camera issue will be on the City Council agenda again at the November 24 meeting.
