Gibrill Diallo was apprehended in Canada
SAINT LUCIE, Fla. —
A 22-year-old man from New York is facing charges in an organized check fraud and money laundering scheme, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit conducted a multi-jurisdictional investigation, culminating in the arrest of Gibrill Diallo, of the Bronx.
A check mailed by a Port St. Lucie real estate company was stolen, fraudulently altered, and deposited into a bank account established using a stolen identity, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives traced the stolen funds through multiple bank accounts and Zelle transfers allegedly used to conceal their origin before the money was deposited into Diallo’s personal bank account.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Diallo with money laundering ($300–$20,000), scheme to defraud ($50,000 or more) and grand theft.
On Oct. 14, Diallo was apprehended by Canadian border authorities while attempting to enter Canada from the United States. He was detained at the Niagara County Jail in New York before being extradited to St. Lucie County on Wednesday at 9:39 p.m. to face the charges.
Total bond was set at $30,000 for the three charges.
“Our detectives followed the money, uncovered a complex financial scheme, and pursued every lead until the suspect was brought back to St. Lucie County to face justice,” Sheriff Richard Del Toro said in a statement. “This case reflects the relentless investigative work and determination of our Economic Crimes Unit. Our residents and businesses work hard for what they earn, and they deserve to know that when someone tries to take advantage of them, our detectives will go the extra mile to hold those responsible accountable.”
