Sentencing Tuesday in Halloween mass shooting that left two dead

  • October 24, 2026

ORLANDO, Fla. – One week from today, Halloween night, will mark two years since two people were killed, and seven others injured, in a mass shooting in Downtown Orlando.

The man found guilty of the crime will face a judge Tuesday to learn his fate.

Jaylen Edgar, who was 17 at the time, opened fire near two different intersections among a crowd of thousands that had gathered to celebrate Halloween. 25-year-old Tyrek Hill and 19-year-old Timothy Schmidt died. Seven others were injured.

An emergency call was made just after 1 a.m. indicating several people had been shot in the area of Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue, according to the Orlando Police Department. A second call reported more gunfire near Washington Street and Orange Avenue, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said shortly after the shooting.

“Shortly after reported shots fired, a shooting suspect was located and taken into custody at Washington and Orange,” Smith said. “(…) The officers saw the second shots get fired at Washington. Nobody saw the first one on Central. We used the cameras, of course, to see that, play it back. We had that capability to play it back at major intersections. We played the camera back, saw the shooting happen, we put out his descriptor right away, but the officers saw the second shooting happen because, I mean, you saw there’s like five officers right there looking in that direction when he came and started shooting, and he shot multiple people right there.”

“During this night, we had about 100 officers who are working the detail, spread out as you can see in all the videos, the officers responded very quickly, the officers did a great job. They responded right when they heard the shooting. You know, everybody else is running, they’re not, they’re sitting in position looking for a shooter. They found the shooter. They took him down,” Smith said.

In August, Edgar was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder.

Five of the seven people who survived their gunshot wounds testified for the state during Edgar’s trial.

“He pulls the firearm out of his waist,” Anthony Berry recounted, testifying that he saw Edgar push past a crowd of people, pull a gun out, and start shooting.

Berry was shot in the head.

“I don’t even know if I was still alive at that point,” Berry recalled thinking.

Berry said the shooting has led to a “mental permanent injury.”

Another gunshot victim who testified was Jonathan Valle, who was shot in his head and foot.

“I can’t be in the sun too long,” Valle testified, when asked about the lasting effects of his injuries. “I have to lay down pretty slow. If not, I get vertigo and seizures.”

Teresa Clinton, the mother of one of the victim’s, Tyrek Hill, said the verdict brought her a sense of peace, but she believes the case is about more than the punishment of one person. She wants community leaders to address the gun violence and circumstances that can lead to deadly shootings.

Clinton also spoke about who her son was as a person. ““Tyrek was a very loving, kind, understanding young man,” she said. “He was a gentle giant. He loved people.”

Clinton plans to speak during Edgar’s sentencing, but she said her message will extend beyond her own family and the outcome of the case.

“I know that we can’t stop everything, but we have to be able to pay attention to the things that lead to this,” Clinton said.

Edgar faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He is ineligible for the death penalty, because he was 17 at the time of the shooting.
