FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — A sinkhole has opened up near a busy intersection in Fort Myers Beach, forcing a temporary traffic change.

Town staff found a broken underground pipe near the intersection of Bay Beach Lane and Estero Boulevard while repairing a water service line break at Lake Valencia Condominiums, according to a town post.

The damaged pipe caused erosion under the roadway, which led to the sinkhole forming.

Traffic leaving Bay Beach Lane has been reduced from two lanes down to one, though Estero Boulevard is not affected.

Town officials say there are no active water leaks or service interruptions, and the area has been secured with cones and barricades.

The ground around the sinkhole appears stable, and repairs are set to begin Monday, Oct. 26, pending further assessment.
