King tides are bringing flooding, rip currents and large waves to the East Coast this week, closing some roads and beaches in Florida. Coastal flood warnings cover several low-lying areas, and flooding is worst in places with poor drainage, especially around high tide, which falls around 9 to 11 p.m. for the next few days. King tides happen a few times a year when the moon is at perigee, its closest point to Earth, and in alignment with Earth and the sun.
