PORT ST. LUCIE — A Port St. Lucie man died after his electric bicycle crashed into a truck at Northeast Floresta Drive and Northeast Airoso Boulevard.
A preliminary investigation shows Richard Kenneth Douglas Willis, 35, was riding an e-bike south on the east sidewalk of Northeast Airoso Boulevard just after noon Nov. 11, police said.
A 2018 Dodge Ram pickup, towing a 2021 flat utility trailer with a skid steer on it, was travelingwest on Northeast Floresta Drive.
As the Dodge turned right onto Airoso, the bike was unable to negotiate the curve on the sidewalk and drove off the sidewalk, striking the metal loading ramp on the rear passenger side of the trailer, according to Master Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesman.
Willis was ejected from the bike and sustained serious injuries, Mesiti said. He was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce where he was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the Dodge remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.
There was no indication of impairment of the truck driver, police said. It appears the driver had a green light and was making a proper turn when the bike collided with the trailer.
Witnesses estimated the bike was traveling at about 30 mph prior to the crash, Mesiti said.
