‘Need to tighten up’: Perry Street resident reacts to weekend shooting

  • October 27, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee leaders gathered Tuesday at the scene of Saturday’s Perry Street shooting to discuss ways to prevent another similar tragedy.

Local leaders are navigating how to prevent violence, but say they can’t do it alone.

City and County Commissioners, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and others took part in Tuesday’s gathering.

All agree that more needs to be done to keep the public safe, while still having fun and celebrating Florida A&M University traditions.

Delverna Henry, who has owned property on Perry Street for over 20 years, said Saturday’s shooting has left her saddened and wondering what’s next.

She said the main reason she opens her home to vendors during FAMU events is for the community.

“Most of the time, Homecoming, we have more teenagers out here without parents, and the parents, I feel, need to tighten up and give them a curfew,” Henry said. “I would like to see a curfew shortly after the game is over. Give them time to get food, you know, but within an hour, they need to clear out.”

Henry said that she will open her home to vendors for FAMU’s next home game. It is not known how many vendors will return to Perry Street this weekend.
