Port St. Lucie Police release names of victims of double-homicide shooting

NEW TONIGHT WE’RE HEARING FROM A PORT SAINT LUCIE WOMAN WHO WAS HELD HOSTAGE IN HER HOME BY A MAN WHO POLICE SAY KILLED TWO OF HER NEIGHBORS BEFORE KILLING HIMSELF. WE ALWAYS SAID SOME DAY. HE’S GOING TO BLOW. AND. BUT WE NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THIS BAD. WE WERE LIVE AT THAT SCENE ON TROPICAL CIRCLE, BRINGING YOU THE STORY AS BREAKING NEWS LAST NIGHT AT SIX. 24 HOURS AGO. INVESTIGATORS SAY THIS BEGAN WITH AN ARGUMENT BETWEEN THE GUNMAN, 62 YEAR OLD PAUL MAURICE RIO, AND SOME OF HIS NEIGHBORS. THERE APPARENTLY WAS A LONGSTANDING DISAGREEMENT WHICH ENDED IN THE FATAL GUNFIRE. REPORTER RACHEL PERRY RETURNED TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD TODAY, AND SHE SPOKE WITH THE WOMAN WHO WAS HELD HOSTAGE. BUT SURVIVED. I COULD BE DEAD. HE HE COULD HE COULD HAVE JUST TURNED ON ME IN A SECOND FOR WHAT FELT LIKE THREE WHOLE HOURS. 77 YEAR OLD SUZANNE ROTHERMEL SAYS SHE WAS HELD HOSTAGE. HE SAID QUICK, CLOSE THE DOOR. THE GARAGE DOOR. I THOUGHT SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED OUTSIDE. WELL, I FOUND OUT SOMETHING REALLY BAD DID HAPPEN. JUST SECONDS LATER, SHE SAYS, 62 YEAR OLD PAUL MARIO TOLD HER HE HAD SHOT TWO OF THEIR NEIGHBORS, SAYING HE HAD JUST BEEN EVICTED. I THOUGHT MAYBE AN ACCIDENT SOMEWHERE, BUT I NEVER GUESSED IT WAS. HIM SHOOTING SOMEBODY UNTIL HE TOLD ME THAT HE SHOT THEM. SHE WATCHED AS HE ATE HER FOOD AND EVEN DRANK A BEER. AS TIME TICKED BY, ROTHERMEL STARTED LOSING HOPE. I JUST FIGURED IF HE’S GOING TO KILL ME, WHAT CAN I DO? I CAN’T RUN OUT BECAUSE HE’LL SHOOT ME ANYWAY. BUT HE DIDN’T. INSTEAD, ROTHERMEL SAYS HE LET HER GO OUT OF THIS DOOR. EVENTUALLY TURNING THE GUN ON HIMSELF. HE LATER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. HE COULD HAVE SHOT ME THEN, BUT I JUST WANTED TO GET OUT. SO PENNY AND I. GOT OUT THE DOOR AND HE SAID TO THEM, DON’T SHOOT HER. LOOKING AROUND AT THE CRIME SCENE, HER HOME HAS BECOME ROTHERMEL SAYS SHE’S JUST THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE. WITH PENNY STILL BY HER SIDE. SHE WAS MY SAVING GRACE EVER SINCE MY HUSBAND DIED. AND I GOT HER. The victims were identified as 54-year-old Mark D. Golden and 85-year-old David W. Gasik, both of Port St. Lucie.

On Monday afternoon, 62-year-old Paul Maraio shot and killed the victims inside the Tropical East Community HOA over an ongoing dispute.
