Syracuse (4-10-2, 1-8-0) lost to Miami (10-3-3, 4-2-2), 2-1, in the final moments on Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. The Hurricanes broke a 1-1 tie on a tally by Kambryl Armstrong with 2:39 left in the contest.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
With the contest knotted at 1-1 and the clock winding down, Miami’s Armstrong broke away from Syracuse’s back line and slid the ball past Orange goalkeeper Maya Naimoli with under three minutes remaining. The goal, her fourth of the season, proved to be the game winner.
WISBECK GIVES SYRACUSE THE EARLY LEAD
The Orange struck first in the contest. Syracuse was awarded a penalty kick 13:35 into the game, after sophomore forward Ali Howard was fouled in the box by Miami’s Amanda Peck. Video replay confirmed the call, and junior midfielder Gabby Wisbeck took the PK for Syracuse. Wisbeck held back long enough for goalkeeper Atlee Olofson to make her move, and settled the ball into the lower corner to put SU ahead, 1-0.
MIAMI GETS ON THE BOARD
The visitors tallied early in the second half. Teegan Melenhorst fed Armstrong on the right wing and she connected with Madelynn Sadusky, who tallied her fourth goal of the fall. The goal even the score at 1-1, 52:38 into the contest.
NAIMOLI EQUALS A SEASON-BEST EIGHT SAVES
Naimoli, a junior, helped keep the match close throughout. She finished with eight saves, equaling her season-best effort.
Her first save set the tone for the evening. Miami’s Sadusky created an opening and attacked the cage. Naimoli came out past the six-meter line and stopped Sadusky’s effort with a kick save. After finishing the first half with three stops, Naimoli posted another five after the intermission.
