Man dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound after SR-408 crash with construction truck

  • October 30, 2026

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orlando man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday morning following a crash on State Road 408 in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 1, in the Gotha area.

According to an FHP report, a 2021 Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound on SR-408 in the inside lane when it struck the rear of a 2022 Ford F-650 construction truck. The construction truck, which was equipped with an active light board, was stationary in the inside lane as part of an active lane closure in a construction zone.

Troopers said the driver of the Charger failed to move over for the stopped construction truck ahead, causing the front of the Charger to collide with the rear of the F-650.

The driver of the construction truck told investigators that after the collision, he witnessed the Charger’s driver exit the vehicle and begin yelling. The truck driver then left the scene briefly to notify law enforcement in the area. When the truck driver returned to the crash site, he found the Charger’s driver back inside the vehicle, slumped over the steering wheel and not breathing.

The driver of the Charger, a 48-year-old man from Orlando, was pronounced deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to FHP.

The driver of the construction truck, a 50-year-old man from Deltona, sustained minor injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Friday’s deadly crash on SR-408 comes as Orange County has seen two other serious crashes in the past five days involving vehicles failing to move over for roadside workers and emergency personnel on State Road 429 — incidents that have put Florida’s Move Over law in focus.
