FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A Fort Myers mother is facing multiple charges after deputies say she hit another vehicle, left the scene and continued to an elementary school, where she picked up her two children while under the influence of alcohol.

Jamie Hensley, 46, was arrested Thursday afternoon near Tanglewood Elementary School after a school resource officer stopped her SUV. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno says the incident began around 3:30 p.m. near Manchester Boulevard and Covington Circle East.

Investigators say Hensley struck a vehicle that had broken down along Manchester Boulevard. The other driver told deputies the vehicle was pulled to the side of the road when it was hit. Instead of stopping, deputies say Hensley continued toward Tanglewood Elementary School.

The other driver provided a description of Hensley’s white Kia Telluride and its license plate number to the school’s resource officer. According to the arrest report, a Fort Myers Police Officer spotted Hensley’s SUV after she picked up her two children and continued driving through the school’s pickup circle.

The officer directed Hensley to pull over. Investigators say Hensley took longer than usual to open her window or door. The officer reported smelling alcohol, noticing her droopy eyes and hearing her slur her words.

Deputies also observed damage along the passenger side of her SUV. Hensley agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises but struggled to complete them, according to the arrest report.

Following her arrest, Hensley provided two breath samples at the Lee County Jail. The results registered 0.313 and 0.319, nearly four times Florida’s legal driving limit of 0.08.

Nearby neighbor Jonathan Gallinari expressed concern,

“I hope that I just hope this person is able to get some help that they need, and I hope the community really just comes around and rallies around and helps her out and lets her know that you know she made a mistake, but that doesn’t have to define you. That could be the turning point in your life. So get the help that you need.”

Hensley faces five charges, including DUI, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage and two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. During her first court appearance Friday morning, Hensley’s attorney told the judge she has no prior criminal history. Hensley’s next court appearance is scheduled for November.
