TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Another high-stakes meeting between Leon County Schools and the Leon Classroom Teachers’ Association is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
The two organizations have struggled to move forward after the LCTA voted down a slight pay raise last month.
Scott Mazur, president of the teachers’ association, said people need to realize that asking for higher teacher pay isn’t just about teachers, because their pay directly translates into the quality of education students receive.
“It’s significant to our educators that are representative of union members and non-union members – the bargaining unit – that said, ‘It’s just not enough. It’s hard to stay in the classroom, can’t focus on my students as much because I’ve got to work multiple jobs.’”

Leon County Schools previously said in a statement that there wasn’t additional money available without cutting programs, saying reserves were depleted and expenses had risen.
LCS declined to comment ahead of Wednesday’s meeting.
Mazur said they will continue pushing for a salary increase in ongoing discussions.
“Based off what we see in budgetary practices, there is room to move and shift priorities, choices that you [the district] can make that can make that happen,” he said. “So, we just want to be very clear. This isn’t about trying to harm our schools or break the bank. It’s about getting what is due respect.”
