Lee County commissioners are planning to honor Capt. Daniel Eggers is proposing to rename a stretch of Veterans Parkway in Cape Coral.
Eggers, a Green Beret and Cape Coral native, was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
Commissioner Brian Hamman said the idea came from how we honor law enforcement officers who fall in the line of duty.
“What a great way to honor our veterans, too, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Hamman.
The proposal to dedicate part of the road to Eggers is set to be made official next week.
“One of the state representatives, Mike Giallombardo, reached out about honoring Capt. Eggers,” said Hamman. “Since Veterans Parkway is a county road, we’re making it official next week.”
The county plans to reveal a sign bearing Eggers’ name at the next commission meeting. Veterans believe this tribute carries a deeper meaning.
“I think it’s a great thing — a little piece of gratitude from the community to those who gave everything,” said Air Force veteran Gerardo Garcia. “It means a lot, especially for the families.”
Garcia emphasized that the tribute is about more than just a name.
“It’s about keeping their stories alive for the next generation,” said Garcia.
Hamman hopes the dedication will inspire young people.
“I want every student in JROTC to see that serving your country is noble — and that our community truly values that service,” said Hamman.
Garcia shared his feelings about seeing the names of fallen heroes.
“When I see those names, it’s peace. It’s pride. You just feel it driving by,” said Garcia.
Commissioners plan to make the designation official next Tuesday in Cape Coral.
