Make way for the Martins.
“The Best of Steve Martin & Martin Short” national tour is coming to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood on Friday, Jan. 15.
The dynamic duo’s show is a mix of stand-up comedy, character sketches, video montages and bluegrass music (a la Steve Martin’s banjo-brilliant virtuosity and special guests Jeff Babko and Steep Canyon Rangers). There is also a lot of good-natured skewering of each other in the back-and-forth banter, born out of 40-plus years of friendship.
• Though they met a few years earlier, Short and Martin’s first project together was the 1986 film, “Three Amigos.”
• They reunited on the silver screen in 1991’s “Father of the Bride” and its 1995 sequel, “Father of the Bride Part II.”
• In 2018, they had a Netflix comedy special, the critically acclaimed “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life.”
• They’ve been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show, “A Very Stupid Conversation.”
• They’re starring in — and share producing credits alongside Selena Gomez — “Only Murders in the Building,” which returns for its sixth season on Dec. 8. The comedic/murder-mystery Hulu series has included a who’s who of Tinseltown and Broadway, including Meryl Streep, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Sting, Matthew Broderick, Keegan-Michael Key, Shirley MacLaine, Jesse Williams, Tina Fey, Nathan Lane, Andrea Martin, Jane Lynch, Renée Zellweger, Melissa McCarthy and more. Lots more.
Ahead of their Hard Rock show, the two comedy kings did an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel — Short from Los Angeles, Martin from New York City — and here is more about the tour from that Q&A session.
Q: If you could, in a non-creepy way, whisper something into the ears of every audience member just before they walk into Hard Rock Live, what would you say?
Martin: I would whisper, “Relax, I think you’re going to enjoy it.” Or I would say, ‘I’m better than Marty — you’ll see.”
Short: “Doesn’t Marty look better than Steve?”
Q: Do you have some sort of backstage ritual that you do before a live stage performance?
Short: I warm up vocally with a [singing] warmup tape from [1992] because she talks about, “Well, it’s election day and Bill Clinton is going to be president.”
Martin: I actually just try to relax. We rehearse and now we have maybe an hour before a show and I just kind of lie down and try to be zen — or, what do they call it, bedrotting.
“I started my career in Coconut Grove. Florida would hire me, early on … So I’m affectionate toward Florida.” — Steve Martin
Q: What would you like the audience to know about the show’s special guest stars, Jeff Babko and Steep Canyon Rangers?
Short: They’re just phenomenal musicians. I’ve toured with Jeff for over 20 years. And he’s the keyboard guy for [Jimmy] Kimmel’s band, the head of Kimmel’s band. And Steep Canyon Rangers, Steve has toured with them for years.
Martin: Jeff has a great sense of humor. He fits right in. When we’re onstage, there’s something very defined, but offstage there’s something very defined too, which is kind of everybody gets along, has a good time. I started playing with the Steep Canyon Rangers, I think it was maybe 2011, I’m not sure. So we’ve been playing together for 15 years and we’ve released albums. We won a Grammy. They won a Grammy. We wrote songs together. We just have a long history.
Q: Florida has been low-hanging tropical fruit, if you will, for a lot of skewering in comedy. Will any of that make it into your SoFlo performance?
Martin: We tend to not put down the place we’re in until after we leave
Short: We’re wise that way
Martin: No, we love Florida. We had a show in West Palm Beach for a hundred people — that wasn’t tickets sold, it was a charity event. And we were kind of worried about it, and it was one of our best shows we ever did.
Q: Other than that, what are some of your favorite Sunshine State memories or impressions?
Short: I am always amazed at how beautiful it is. I haven’t spent that much time in Florida, I must admit.
Martin: I started my career in Coconut Grove. There was a little club there called Bubba’s and I worked there, you know, and I played for like 40 people. There was a [journalist] there who gave me a great review. And I worked Tallassee a lot for college shows. The Beef & Bottle Club [in Gainesville], I played there. I don’t know it it’s still open, probably not. So I have a lot of good memories. Florida would hire me, early on, let’s put it that way. So I’m affectionate toward Florida.
Q: What else can you share with our readers about the comedy concert you’re bringing here?
Short: I just think it is a show that we’re very proud of, because it’s kind of wall-to-wall laughs, but it’s also wall-to-wall entertainment
Martin: And I’ll say this: Even though we’re aged — especially Marty — we’re not lazy. We do our best to deliver a high-energy, fun, interesting show. When the audience leaves they’ll go, “Well that was worth it.”
