PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. —
Heavy rain has led to widespread flooding in Port St. Lucie, creating hazardous driving conditions and prompting police to urge residents to stay home.
According to a Facebook post, the Port St. Lucie Police Department is responding to numerous calls involving vehicles stranded in floodwaters. Authorities are asking the community to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.
Flooded areas include SW Airoso Boulevard, SE Thornhill Drive and surrounding side streets, Southworth Boulevard and Jeanette Drive, Country Club Estates, SW Discovery Way and Community Boulevard in Tradition, and LTC Parkway.
PSLPD issued several safety reminders:
“Do not drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown! Never underestimate the depth or current of floodwaters. Just a few inches of moving water can be dangerous. If your vehicle becomes stranded in floodwaters and you are not in immediate danger requiring an emergency rescue, you may contact a towing company directly for assistance.”
Officers and emergency personnel are working to respond to calls throughout the city. For questions regarding school closures, residents are advised to contact schools directly.
“Please be patient and stay safe. If you don’t need to be on the road, please don’t be,” PSLPD said.
The department expressed appreciation for the community’s cooperation during these challenging weather conditions.
The St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s officer will be closing offices at 2 p.m. today.
