PORT ST. LUCIE — Persistent heavy rain over the weekend and into Monday has left standing water on roadways throughout Port St. Lucie, prompting multiple closures, canceled city activities and warnings for motorists.

In an update issued Monday evening, Nov. 2, the city urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned against driving through flooded streets.

“Turn around, find an alternate route and never underestimate the depth or power of floodwater,” the city advised.

As of 6:45 p.m. Monday, the following major roadways were closed, according to the city’s advisory:

• California Boulevard and Savona Boulevard intersection

• Port St. Lucie Boulevard and Aviation Avenue

• Eastbound Prima Vista Boulevard, west of Airoso Boulevard

• St. Lucie County also had closed westbound Prima Vista Boulevard east of Airoso Boulevard.

City officials said crews were monitoring St. Lucie West Boulevard and the intersection of Becker Road and Savona Boulevard for possible closures.

The Florida Department of Transportation also was asking motorists to find alternate routes around Port St. Lucie Boulevard between Parr Drive and Alcantarra Boulevard because of standing water and potholes.

Crews working to manage flooding

According to the city, Public Works crews have been inspecting and clearing drainage systems, grates and inlets to keep water moving. Workers also have been repairing potholes caused by standing water and continued rainfall.

Public Works and police personnel have been coordinating efforts to monitor affected areas and respond to residents needing assistance.

Despite those efforts, the sustained rainfall has resulted in standing water in neighborhoods and along streets.

The city noted that swales, retention ponds, canals and other drainage features are designed to collect and temporarily hold stormwater. During prolonged heavy rainfall, some streets also serve as temporary stormwater storage areas to help direct water away from homes and buildings.

City closures and cancellations

The city announced that City Hall will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 3. However, city facilities serving as voting locations will remain open.

The Planning and Zoning Board meeting scheduled for Monday, Nov. 2, was canceled. According to the city, agenda items will be carried over to the December meeting.

All city parks, recreation programs and fitness centers also will be closed Tuesday. That includes the children’s camp scheduled at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center.

City officials said they will monitor conditions before determining when facilities and programs can reopen.

Trash collection delays possible

Solid waste collection also has been affected by the weather, according to the city.

The St. Lucie County Landfill closed early Monday because of inclement weather. FCC Environmental Services continued residential collection until its trucks reached capacity.

Some households may experience delays if crews were unable to complete their routes before the trucks filled.

Residents whose trash is not collected on their scheduled service day are asked to leave materials curbside, if possible, for pickup.

The city warned that if weather continues to disrupt collection operations and landfill access, recovery efforts could extend into Saturday.

City officials said crews will continue monitoring conditions and responding to flooding. Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Port St. Lucie’s website and social media channels for updates on road closures, facility operations and trash collection.
