Key Biscayne Mayor Joe Rasco, in one of his final duties before being termed out after his latest run of four years, honored the late Ron Erbel, one of the founding members of the Fire Rescue Department who selflessly devoted his time as a volunteer firefighter long before that.

Reading off the proclamation last Tuesday night, presented to Erbel’s widow, Victoria Jackson, Rasco said, “The Key Biscayne community wishes to recognize and honor the life, legacy, and dedicated service of Ronald “Ron” Andrew Erbel, who faithfully served the Village of Key Biscayne as a firefighter for over 26 years.”

Rasco spoke about Erbel also having served as the Fire Department’s Chaplain, “giving support and counseling to Key Biscayne’s firefighters for over 20 years,” and his volunteer efforts to be part of the rescue and recovery teams that searched through the rubble and ruins of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at Ground Zero.

“Tragically, over the years, exposure to toxic materials in the aftermath have claimed numerous lives like Ron’s,” the proclamation read. “For those who were lucky enough to know Ron, he was a true friend, a kind neighbor, and a hero.”

Former Fire Chief Eric Lang talked about his “line of duty” death and the sacrifices he made.

“I’m very happy we were able to do this in your last act,” Lang told Rasco.

Also attending were current Fire Chief Joe Fernandez and Deputy Chief Dan Feeney.
