Control of Congress is on the line in the midterms, and it could shape the final two years of Trump’s term.
President Donald Trump has spent weeks campaigning across the country for Republican candidates, signaling that his remaining two years in office have a lot riding on the results and control of Congress. Here’s a look at what’s at stake for his presidency.
What happens if Democrats win the House?
The final two years of Trump’s second term will be dictated in large part by who controls Congress following these midterm elections.
If Democrats win control of the House, they will be in the driver’s seat on legislation in Congress. Democrats would also be able to launch investigations and subpoena Trump administration officials to testify.
What happens if Democrats win the Senate?
If Democrats win control of the Senate, they can do things like block the president’s judicial and administration nominees.
What happens if Democrats win both?
If Democrats win control of both chambers of Congress, that scenario could bring the most gridlock to Washington.
Trump has already said he will be “Mr. Veto” if Democrats win, meaning he will put an end to any legislation passed in Congress.
It is unlikely the Democratic Party would have enough votes in Congress to overturn a veto. Trump says the goal at that point would be to make Democrats come to him to make a deal.
What happens if Republicans win both?
If Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate, President Trump has a much clearer path to advance his agenda and priorities.
