Riding the wave of Desmond Bane‘s buzzer-beating 3-pointer against the Trail Blazers on Monday, the Magic hoped to travel to New York and earn a quality win on the road Wednesday.
Without Paolo Banchero most of the night due to a left groin strain suffered in the first half, Orlando came together and handed the Knicks their first home loss of the season, 124-107, thanks to a team-high 28 points from Franz Wagner.
Jamahl Mosley‘s squad trailed by just 2 points early in the contest and led by as many as 21 as the Magic won their fifth game in the past seven facing a New York squad (7-4) that was playing on the second night of a back-to-back.
Led by a game-high 31 points from Jalen Brunson, who fouled out late, the Knicks were within 11 points of the Magic midway through the third quarter and later nine in the fourth.
But Orlando had five different scorers finish in double figures, including Bane who totaled 22 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists in front of New York celebrities Spike Lee, Ben Stiller and late-night host Jimmy Fallon sitting courtside.
Back to a .500 record, the Magic (6-6) return to Kia Center when they host the Nets on Friday.
Banchero update
Playing on his 23rd birthday, Banchero made his presence felt on both ends of the court early when he notched 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and a block in 12 minutes.
But the Magic forward exited at the 6:40 mark of the second quarter and did not return before the half due to a left groin strain. Initially considered questionable to return, Banchero was ruled out at halftime while Jonathan Isaac started the third quarter in his place.
Despite his injury, the Magic were able to hold New York to just 19 points in the second quarter when Orlando led by 20 heading into the third.
Facemask Franz
Having to wear a clear mask due to a broken nose suffered Monday at home against Portland, Wagner didn’t let that affect him throughout the night Wednesday.
He did a little bit of everything when he recorded a team-high 17 points to go with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block in the first half alone.
Although he shot 2 for 7 from 3-point range, Wagner did a good job of attacking the basket downhill to help the Magic outscore the Knicks 50-48 in the paint. Those drives helped him to get to the free throw line where he shot 6-for-8.
Bench boost
With Banchero unavailable most of the night and multiple starters in foul trouble (Bane and Jalen Suggs with 3 fouls in the first half), Orlando had to rely on its reserves for help.
After missing all five of his 3-point attempts against the Trail Blazers, Tristan da Silva hit his first long-range shot Wednesday. The second-year pro ended with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
It was Anthony Black who led the Magic with 17 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. He added 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals when his third triple put Orlando ahead by 15 with 4:23 left in the game.
Goga Bitadze’s night was highlighted by a difficult scoop layup that gave him 6 points in the first half. The Magic center finished with 10 points and a plus-minus rating of plus-23, which led the team.
