A contractor struck a 6-inch sewer force main at 971 Crandon Blvd. on Tuesday, sending wastewater into The Pines Canal and prompting a no-swim advisory for the waters surrounding Key Biscayne, including Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.
The Village of Key Biscayne first alerted residents of the sewage leak in a 7:30 p.m. text message.
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) crews are on site making emergency repairs, which are expected to take about 12 hours. Key Biscayne police are managing traffic in the area.
In an 8:19 p.m. update, the Village said some wastewater reached The Pines Canal before crews could contain the spill. As a precaution, WASD is posting signs warning the public to avoid contact with the water.
The advisory covers the waters around the entire island, from the bay side to the ocean beaches and around Cape Florida, as shown on the map released by the Village.
Residents and visitors should stay out of the water until the advisory is lifted. Islander News will update this story as more information becomes available.
