PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (CBS12) — Police identified the driver killed in Wednesday’s fatal dump truck and train collision on Northlake Boulevard.
The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) identified 65-year-old Nowel Alfonso as the dump truck driver killed in the collision.
According to the WPBPD, the crash happened around 2:30 p.m. on November 12 at the railroad crossing on Northlake Boulevard just west of Beeline Highway, when Alfonso’s dump truck crossed paths with a northbound Amtrak passenger train. Photos from the scene showed the truck crumpled near the tracks.

The City says westbound lanes remain open, but traffic is being redirected around the closure. Officials have not provided an estimated time for reopening, urging drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. (WPEC)
Alfonso died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to WPBPD. The Amtrak train’s operator was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and no additional injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

The collision caused all eastbound lanes of Northlake Boulevard to close, creating major traffic delays. Westbound lanes remained open, but traffic was redirected around the closure. The roadway has since reopened.
Palm Beach Gardens Police assisted WPBPD at the scene. Officials have urged drivers to use caution near railroad crossings as the investigation continues.
