One of Cape Coral’s largest open spaces is set for transformation, but only after residents have their say. City leaders aim to repurpose the old golf course property and are seeking community input to help design its future.

Tonight marks the first step in the decision-making process. Residents are invited to participate in a public meeting to share their vision for the land.

Renee Limeaux, whose backyard view is at stake, expressed her hopes for the space.

“I would like to see life,” said Limeaux.

She envisions a family-friendly area.

“Have a place for kids to play, maybe a splash pad, just a whole round family atmosphere,” said Limeaux.

Mike Rooney, a neighbor who frequently walks the area, shared his thoughts on the land’s current state.

“Well, when we first started walking down here, just in the last six months or so, they cleaned it out really well. It was all overgrown,” said Rooney. “Trying to prepare for whatever they’re gonna do.”

Neighbors living near the property are eager for a plan but want a say in its development.

“The kids can ride their bikes. Just make a whole gym area. Just do a whole lot of stuff that different age groups can do,” said Limeaux.

During the public meeting, neighbors will have the opportunity to weigh in through a visual design activity, a survey, and a presentation of possible options. Many residents, like those interviewed, want the land to remain green and not filled with condos.

“Pretty much anything that’s building and making more traffic with people that live here, because the roads here are pretty much busy as it is,” said Rooney.

Limeaux also voiced concerns about increased traffic.

“To have, you know, 200 more families here with two cars apiece, that’s 400 cars all the time. No. Nope. Nope, nope,” said Limeaux.

To avoid such a scenario, Limeaux and Rooney planned to attend the meeting at the Public Works Center at 6 p.m.

“I just hope everyone comes out and gives their opinion so that you can’t complain about it later,” said Limeaux.

The meeting, starting soon, provides residents with an opportunity to shape the future of this significant open space. For those unable to attend, a survey is available online.Â
