Florida lawmakers propose bill to protect historic monuments statewide

  • November 15, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida lawmakers are pushing a new bill to protect historic monuments and memorials around the state.

The “Historic Florida Monuments and Memorial Protection Act” would prevent locl governments from removing, damaging or destroying these historical sites.

The bill, filed by State Senator Stan McClain (R), would override local governments, and violations could be met with fines up to $1,000.

If a monument is damaged, local governments would be responsible for restoration. If they can’t afford it, the state would step in, but could withhold funding for arts and culture.

The temporary relocation of a monument or memorial is allowed only under strict guidelines and in certain circumstances.
