WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a SIM card swapping scam, per a social media post.
A SIM card is the small chip inside your phone that lets people make calls, texts and use their phone number. In a SIM swap scam, criminals convince your mobile carrier to switch a person’s phone number onto a SIM card they have.
Once that happens, they can control someone’s phone number and use it to get into accounts that send verification codes by text. They can then try to gain access to your bank or social media.

WCSO PIO Captain Brett Surace said people have to look out for these red flags.
“Unable to make calls or send texts. If your phone suddenly stops working, notifications of activity elsewhere, receiving messages that your number has been activated on another device, inability to access accounts, unauthorized transactions or seeing charges on your credit card or online accounts that you did not make.”
WCSO said if people suspect a scam, they should contact their mobile carrier immediately to regain control of their phone number. Folks should also check all accounts linked to their phone and reset their passwords. If their funds are lost or their accounts compromised, they should call 911 to report the incident.
