The hallowed grounds of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid hosted its first NFL game, and the Spanish crowd was treated to a game-winning field goal as the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders 16-13 in overtime Sunday.
A penalty-filled first half kept both teams out of the end zone until the third quarter, and gritty defensive stands marked the battle between two teams that entered the day 3-7. Washington quarterback Marcus Mariota connected with receiver Deebo Samuel for a 20-yard score on the first possession of the third quarter before the Commanders’ defense stuffed the Dolphins on fourth-and-goal on the following drive.
Miami, however, returned the favor in the fourth, opening the quarter with a 10-play touchdown drive before stuffing Washington on a goal-line stand on the next drive.
The Commanders kept the game tied with one more fourth-and-goal stop as the Dolphins opted to go for a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining, but then Washington kicker Matt Gay missed a 56-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.
On the Commanders’ first offensive play of the extra session, Mariota was intercepted by Jack Jones to give the game away. Three De’Von Achane rushes later, the Dolphins trotted out kicker Riley Patterson to clinch the win with a 29-yarder.

Dolphins red zone offense struggled mightily
Penalties, bizarre play-calling and a stifling Commanders defense kept Miami from punching it in the end zone on three of its four trips to the red zone. The Commanders held up for two goal-line stands, the last of which left Achane with a back injury late in the fourth quarter (he returned in overtime). When he went out after two failed attempts to punch it in, Ollie Gordon was stopped in his tracks on fourth-and-goal from the 1.
Washington’s defense came alive for the first time in nearly a month, recording a pair of first-half sacks (one by Jacob Martin in the red zone and the other by Jonathan Jones on a cornerback blitz), a third sack by Von Miller late in the fourth quarter and then two second-half goal-line stands, the last of which gave the Commanders a chance to win it with a minute and 41 seconds remaining. Having coach Dan Quinn make the calls seemed to make a significant difference, especially in the red zone. — Nicki Jhabvala, Commanders beat writer
Commanders cost themselves dearly
For the first time in a long time, the costly plays didn’t come from Washington’s defense; they came from the offense and special teams. Receiver/returner Jaylin Lane went out with a hip injury, so when Washington’s defense forced Miami to punt from deep in their own territory late in the fourth quarter, it was cornerback Mike Sainristil back to field it. He muffed it and Miami recovered at Washington’s 42-yard line, giving Miami a chance to claim the lead in the final four minutes of a 13-13 tie game.

Did Washington blow it?
The Commanders probably regret going for it on fourth-and-1 when the game was tied 13-13 and a little more than six minutes remained. An easy field goal might have given the Commanders a win in regulation, but instead, they went for it, and Mariota’s pass for Zach Ertz fell incomplete after the tight end slipped as he made his cut. — Jhabvala
