According to Miami Police, on Saturday, two officers were on patrol in the Brickell area of Southwest Second Avenue and 11th Street when they saw Rosario inside a Chevy Equinox while holding a megaphone and shouting at people.
An arrest report said a large crowd then formed as Rosario continued to disturb the peace.
The two officers then attempted a traffic stop and approached the driver’s side door to speak with Rosario, the report said. During an exchange with Rosario, an officer told him to get out of the car, and Rosario stepped on the gas pedal while closing his door, which struck one of the officers.
The officer who was struck, the report said, suffered a cut on his forearm.
As Rosario continued to drive away, the two officers pursued him, and Rosario came to stop and reversed his vehicle into one of their cruisers, which caused damage to the passenger side front bumper, the report said.
The officers gave Rosario commands to exit his vehicle, which he refused to do, and he rolled up all four of his vehicle’s windows, the report said.
Rosario’s driver’s side window was then broken by the officers, the report said, and he was removed from the vehicle.
When one of the officers had an altercation with Rosario, he noticed that Rosario had a handgun on his waistband, took it and told him to get on the ground, the report said.
Rosario was eventually handcuffed and detained, and a loaded 9mm pistol with one round chambered in the barrel was recovered at the scene.
Both Rosario and the officer who was injured were checked by Miami Fire Rescue, and Rosario was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
According to Rosario’s campaign website, he was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and announced his intention to run for Miami-Dade County mayor in 2028.
Rosario was also a former candidate for Miami Beach mayor.
During his court appearance on Sunday, a judge denied Rosario’s bond.
