The move was approved in late 2024, with initial plans to have the move complete by the end of this year. Since then, Foot Locker has been bought out by Dick’s Sporting Goods.

At the time, Foot Locker President and CEO Mary Dillon said in an earnings call that the St. Pete move would build on existing connections in the city.

“We have a large center of gravity there, (we) already have a large concentration of folks there already, and we think it’s a great place for us to continue to grow and do business and continue to attract top talent,” Dillon said. “We will maintain a limited presence only in New York, but we will have a presence connecting us to sneaker culture, sports, fashion. We think this is going to continue to give us better opportunities, both for further collaboration across the business, and there’s some financial benefit over time as well.”

The project would have brought more than 150 jobs to the area. It would have been the third Fortune 500 company based in St. Petersburg and the fourth in Pinellas County.

City councilman Core Givern Jr., who represents District 7, said the latest development was a disappointment.

“I think it’s a loss for the city but it’s an opportunity for us to hopefully reengage other corporations to see where we go from here,” he said.
