The Blessing Cup serves elderly in need

  • November 18, 2025

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee non-profit is improving the lives of the elderly poor by providing shelter, food, clothing, and financial assistance.

In 2019, Brenda and Michael Popp created The Blessing Cup of Tallahassee, Inc. in honor of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth, who died at age 40 of breast cancer.

She was devoted to the elderly poor and she requested that we use her inheritance to serve the elderly poor.

The Popps say they identified a need in the elderly community. A critical need for a clean, safe environment, especially for those living in poverty.

They purchased a home in Midtown for men who were homeless or poor and needed a place to live. They also bought a home for women who need affordable housing.

Robert Williams says he was living on the southside of Tallahassee and couldn’t afford the rent. He met the Popps through his church, and they found him a place to live in their men’s home.

I really appreciate this and if I get to a point where I can help someone else I’ll pass it on.

The Popps say they built their organization on companionship while providing seniors with essential resources like food, medication, transportation and affordable housing. The Blessing Cup is run solely by volunteers, and 100% of the money donated to the ministry goes straight back to the people they serve.

Another issue the Popps identified in the elderly is loneliness and isolation. Claude Kenneson is another resident in their men’s home and says not only did the Popps save him from possible homelessness, but it’s been great having a roommate.

They took other people in so I had more people that I was able to communicate with and I have a companion now which I didn’t have before.

The Popps are no strangers to helping those in need. Originally from Georgia, they have been volunteering in different capacities in our community for over 40 years, including in hospice and food distribution.

A mother, father and daughter all dedicated to service, so where did their incredible generosity of spirit come from? Brenda Popp says it comes from the Gospel of St. Matthew.

Feed the hungry, cloth the naked, visit those who are sick.

Claude Kenneson says The Blessing Cup is a blessing to him. It means having companionship and getting his needs taken care of.

I came from poverty myself and I know what its like. To be able to see people at peace and not worried about safety or who is going to take care of them is such a rewarding experience.

The Popps’ daughter, Mary Elizabeth, loved the elderly and envisioned a world where eventually all of our seniors feel loved and cared for.

It makes it feel like she is still living on in the community through this.
