MONROE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A Florida deputy is on the other side of the law after being arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly driving under the influence — with a child in the vehicle.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said Deputy Jesus Abdiel Rojas Burgos, 30, was off-duty and behind the wheel of a private vehicle when he was stopped for speeding around 4:34 a.m. on U.S. 1 near Mile Marker 22.

Deputies said they discovered a young child in the car at the time of the stop. The child was later picked up by a friend, and Rojas Burgos was taken to jail.

“I am committed to the public hearing about significant incidents in the Sheriff’s Office — both positive and negative — from me first,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay.

Rojas Burgos, who joined the department on April 10, 2023, is now under internal affairs investigation. His employment status remains pending, according to MCSO.
