A stretch of Veterans Memorial Parkway in Cape Coral has been dedicated in honor of Captain Daniel Eggers, a local military hero who died in Afghanistan more than two decades ago. This tribute brings a personal touch to the community, transforming a part of the city into a reminder of his sacrifice.

Before the dedication, Captain Eggers spent his youth preparing for a military career, often practicing with friends at Echo Park in Cape Coral.

“He would go with his JROTC buddies and go into Echo Park and pretend to live off the land,” said Anne Marie Eggers.

On Tuesday, the applause filled the Lee County Commissioners meeting as they formally dedicated the first stretch of Veterans Memorial Parkway as Captain Daniel W. Eggers Memorial Highway.

“Hereby proclaim and dedicate a portion of Veterans Parkway as Captain Daniel W. Eggers Memorial Highway in lasting tribute to his courage, leadership, and devotion to his country,” said Brian Hammon.

The Eggers family stood proudly before a replica of the sign, identical to the one now visible to drivers coming off the Midpoint Bridge.

“I think it personalizes it, and it reminds us of the sacrifice he made and his family made,” said Bill Wilcox.

Visitors like Mary Kay Notter felt a personal connection to the dedication.

“It’s very moving. It’s great to see that my father was a veteran. He was in Korea, so, yeah, it’s terrific,” said Notter.

For the Eggers family, this recognition in their hometown holds deep meaning.

“My brother, his name, his sacrifice, started something that will be tremendous,” said Anne Marie Eggers.

Captain Eggers’ name on this highway serves as a constant reminder of the people behind our freedom, with county leaders indicating that more names might follow in similar tributes.Â
