The Magic close out the preseason Thursday night against the Pelicans, and the final exhibition could serve as a dress rehearsal of sorts for Orlando.
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley was asked Tuesday about his approach to the home matchup against New Orleans with next week’s regular season opener — next Wednesday at Kia Center against Miami – around the corner.
“You continue to look at the [lineup] combinations, get guys’ minutes up a little bit more to what they’re going to see in the regular season, but again, try to establish exactly what you’re going to do while still being able to look at the combinations the right way,” Mosley said.
Operating without the availability of Jalen Suggs (left knee trochlea cartilage tear) and Moe Wagner (left knee torn ACL) through the first three preseason contests, Mosley has started seven different players while experimenting with rotations. Regardless of who’s been on the floor to open, Orlando’s starters have averaged 16.6 minutes per game.
Whether or not Suggs will be available on Thursday is still unclear. He was able to do some contact work during Tuesday’s practice, but Mosley said the team would monitor how he responds to the work before making a decision.
One Magic player who knows what it’s like to miss preseason games while recovering from injury is Jonathan Isaac. The Magic forward previously missed 2 1/2 years of games due to various left knee injuries.
Last season was just the second time in Isaac’s eight years as a pro that he appeared in at least 70 regular-season contests.
“I haven’t had a whole lot of preseasons,” Isaac said. “Preseason still feels a little foreign to me. I mean, it’s a game. Everybody wants to go out and do their best and do well, but they don’t necessarily matter towards the [regular] season.
“You just kind of get out there, get loose a little bit, run around, get your legs under you and continue to compete towards the season,” he added.
Magic host summit
Before the game, the Magic will continue their celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by partnering with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to host the fourth annual “Hispanic Impact Summit” from 9 a.m. to noon at Kia Center.
This year’s summit will celebrate the theme “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past and Inspiring the Future,” the team said.
Featured speakers include former Magic guard Carlos Arroyo, along with business and community leaders from Kia, City National Bank, Disney Parks, Ana G. Méndez University and Spectrum News 13. The morning event will feature panel discussions and networking opportunities for an anticipated 200 attendees, according to the team.
To close out the celebration, the Magic will host “Celebrate Diversity Night” during Thursday’s game against New Orleans. Throughout the exhibition, the team will highlight the contributions of key leaders from Central Florida’s Hispanic community.
