A volunteer neighborhood group focused on public safety just threw its support behind Monica Matteo-Salinas’ bid for the Miami Beach Commission.
SOBESafe is endorsing Matteo-Salinas, a City Commission legislative aide now competing in a runoff for the panel’s Group 1 seat.
“(She has) a combination of relevant, insider experience on how things get done with a resident’s desire to get them done better,” the SOBESafe Board wrote on its website.
“Solutions to our challenges are complex and finding them requires a combination of knowing how the system works and being open to finding new paths where you know the old ones don’t perform. Bottom line, we believe Ms. Matteo-Salinas gives us the best chances of success.”
SOBESafe joins others backing Matteo-Salinas, including the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami Beach Commissioners Tanya Bhatt, Laura Dominguez and Alex Fernandez, former Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, and LGBTQ groups SAVE Action PAC and Equality Florida Action PAC.
Matteo-Salinas said she’s “deeply honored” by SOBESafe’s backing.
“Their work to make our neighborhoods safer and more connected is vital to the well-being of our city,” she said. “I share their commitment to a Miami Beach where every resident feels safe and secure. Together, we can make that vision real.”
Matteo-Salinas has worked as a City Commission legislative aide under both Fernandez — who scored a record-setting win in Miami Beach’s General Election earlier this month — and former Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez.
Matteo-Salinas is competing against lawyer Monique Pardo Pope for the Group 1 seat in a Dec. 9 runoff after neither secured a large enough share of the vote in the Nov. 4 General Election to win outright.
Matteo-Salinas is a Democrat, while Pardo Pope is a Republican. Miami Beach elections are nonpartisan, though party politics frequently play into races.
Commission members are elected at large, meaning Group 1 does not represent a specific geographical district and all Miami Beach voters have a say in all races on the ballot.
