TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Everyone loves pizza, especially school kids!
That’s why Ms. Sharia Brent at Sabal Palm Elementary School in Tallahassee is asking for help in providing pizza for her students — in this Community Classroom segment.
She said the pizza not only feeds their hunger, but it also helps with learning.
Ms. Brent wants to use pizza to teach fractions. The third-grade math teacher said she’s big on hands-on learning.
Once her students can see and touch the lessons, and in this case, eat the lessons, it can be easier to grasp the concept of fractions.
Ms. Brent said teaching fractions with pizza can be fun, motivating, confidence-building, and of course, delicious!
“Sometimes, when you can just use those things around you to bring that in, it does help them to see, oh, it’s not as difficult as I thought,” she said. “So for me, that’s important because the book can be fearful. You know? But, pizza and cutting and seeing pieces, that’s not so fearful.”
The name of Ms. Brent’s project, or wish list, on DonorsChoose is “Filling in the Missing Part” with Fractions.
DonorsChoose, our partner for Community Classroom, is a website that allows teachers to request donations for their classroom needs.
Ms. Brent said she wants to show her kids that math is all around them and that it can be as easy as pie.
