TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee City Commission has a new number two.
Wednesday afternoon, they voted for Commissioner Curtis Richardson as the new Mayor Pro Tem.
While it’s largely a ceremonial role, the Mayor Pro Tem acts as a sort of “vice mayor,” overseeing commission meetings and attending events when the mayor can’t make it.
The election sparked some fireworks with a heated back-and-forth between Commissioner Jack Porter and Mayor John Dailey.

Porter has not served as the number two since she joined the commission, while the role has bounced between Richardson and current Mayor Pro Tem Dianne Williams-Cox in recent years.
The vote today highlighted long-standing political divisions in the commission.
“I’m not comfortable with the relationship that’s there, I’m just explaining my position on the vote,” Dailey said.
“Who works for who?” Porter asked. “Who works for who?”
“He [the city manager] reports to the five of us but there’s obviously a lack of confidence in him and you’ve called for him to be fired,” Dailey said.
Ultimately, the commission voted 3-2 for Commissioner Curtis Richardson.
