Cape Coral is buzzing with discussions about the new renderings for the Cape Coral Yacht Club, a project estimated to cost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars. The city council reviewed these plans, but it will take several years to complete.

Many residents expressed nostalgia upon seeing the new designs, while others voiced concerns over the hefty price tag and potential changes to what they consider their community’s second home.

Terri Kowalski, who has cherished memories of the yacht club, shared her feelings.

“It was just magical,” said Kowalski. “I couldn’t believe that I actually lived here and that I wasn’t on vacation.”

Nancy Amator, who found community at the yacht club upon moving to Southwest Florida, also reflected on its significance.

“We came here right away, as soon as we moved in,” said Amator. “It’s always, always brought the community here.”

Both Kowalski and Amator are optimistic about the yacht club’s future after seeing the plans.

The $225 million project has garnered support, but not everyone is on board. Cape Coral homeowner Michelle Glotfelter expressed her reservations.

“I don’t know that anything on the renderings is showing anything that’s going to have us be there often,” said Glotfelter.

The city council’s projected timeline outlines construction in two phases, with a full opening anticipated in 2030. Amator believes the new yacht club will continue to draw the community, despite concerns about tourist-centric developments.

“The community will continue to come here even more so,” said Amator, “because they’re gonna have so much to offer.”

Despite the project’s cost, residents are eager to see progress. The city aims to break ground on the marina before the end of the year.Â
