TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Leon County Schools considered an agreement with Capital Area Action Agency Head Start to bring classrooms to several area schools.
Head Start said it has over 300 slots it wants to open up to LCS students.
Starting in January 2026, Head Start hopes to open classrooms at Hartsfield, Pineview and Sabal Palm Elementary Schools.
Classrooms would expand in August to Apalachee, Astoria, Oak Ridge, Sealey and Springwood.
This collaboration promotes early learning and will help facilitate smooth transitions to kindergarten.
Superintendent Rocky Hanna said this “just makes sense.”
“If we can have some of these spaces full of three and four-year-olds to help with professional development and then those kids will metriculate into our kindergarten classrooms when they become five and six-year-olds,” Hanna said. “It just makes complete sense that we would take advantage of space at some of our schools to expand a program, especially for pre-K kids.”
According to the Memorandum of Understanding, Head Start will provide student screening data, refer children for evaluation and pay for meals and the use of the facility.
As part of the agreement, Leon County Schools will prioritize Head Start evaluations, provide classroom space and include Head Start staff and families in school events.
The agreement was unanimously approved Tuesday night.
