TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – It’s time to party! That is, if you help these students have the celebration they deserve.
For this month’s Community Classroom, Springwood Elementary School in Tallahassee is rewarding student achievement with a party!
“Community Classroom” highlights a teacher from the Big Bend or South Georgia to help them with their classroom needs.
Springwood’s reward party is called the Big Mix.
The party is for students who get 100% on their fact fluency for multiplication and division.
Math Coach Danielle Vaughn said academics and becoming fluent with those math strategies are very important at Springwood Elementary, so students should be rewarded.
The huge party is held in the cafeteria, where students walk around and sign each other’s shirts and write multiplication facts on the shirts, and ask each other about the facts.
Vaughn said students look forward to it every year.
“We’re building a positive culture here at Springwood, where the students love coming here every single day. So, rewards are always a thing for us,” she said. “I want them to remember their elementary school years as fun, rewarding, the culture as just being amazing here.”
The shirts will be provided for students, along with dye for the kids to tie-dye them.
The school is hoping for enough donations to cover those costs, as well as other party items.
Ms. Vaughn said the kids get a sparkly ticket to invite them to the Big Mix party.
She said the students really love it and work hard to go.
She said the number of kids doubled this year, and that first graders are doing multiplication now because they want to go.

The Community Classroom is a partnership with DonorsChoose, which is a website where teachers sign up to request donations for anything they need.
