Miami has employed a suffocating defense under coach Mario Cristobal, allowing just 14.2 points per game, good for 7th in the NCAA. The Hurricanes are currently riding a two-game winning streak, defeating Syracuse 38-10 and most recently, beating North Carolina State 41-7. NC State scored its lone touchdown with 2:18 left in the game, after being thoroughly dominated by the Hurricane defense. NC State managed just 143 total yards for the game, only 23 on the ground, and 10 of those were on the late touchdown run.

After starting their season 0-3 and firing head coach Brent Pry, the Hokies have played serviceable football, going 3-4 under new coach Philip Montgomery. Their last two games have resulted in losses, a 28-16 decision to No. 16 Louisville and last week, a 34-14 loss on the road against Florida State. The Hokies played the Seminoles closer than the score indicated, only losing the total yards battle 431-363, but two costly turnovers and an 8-to-1 penalty ratio led to the defeat.
