INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — The suspect who shot three and killed Deputy Sweeting-Mashkow has succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

In a post announcing 33-year-old Michael Halberstam’s death, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) also announced that Sweeting-Mashkow has been posthumously promoted to Sergeant.

According to Sheriff Flowers, the tragic incident occurred when deputies were attempting to evict Halberstam from a residence. As the deputies and the locksmith entered the home, he allegedly opened fire indiscriminately at them.

In a subsequent investigation, investigators found what Sheriff Flowers described as “unusual posts” by Halberstam on social media. He allegedly made highly critical remarks about his former employer, UPS, and shared negative content about the sheriff’s office on Facebook.

“Thank you to all of our community for your continued support during these difficult times,” IRCSO wrote in the announcement. “Funeral service information will be provided at a later date.”
