ORLANDO, Fla. — The Bishop Moore Hornets’ day starts before the sun is up, which is no problem for senior running back Amar’e Johnson.

What You Need To Know

The Bishop Moore Hornets are 10-1 this season

They hosted Gainesville Eastside in the Class 3A regional semifinals on Friday night

Senior running back Amar’e Johnson leads the offense with over 1,600 rushing yards and 26 total touchdowns

Johnson is committed to Missouri State for football

“It helps us mentally. Knowing no one else is up right now and just have to go out and get it,” Johnson said. “We’ve been doing this since January, but we’re used to it now.”

For Johnson to do his job, he needs his teammates to do theirs, which they do at a high-level.

Bishop Moore has a record of 10-1 this season and hosted Gainesville Eastside in a Class 3A regional semifinal football game on Friday night.

“It takes so much stress off me. Not trying to do too much on a play,” Johnson said. “I can trust my brother knowing they’re going to do their assignment so that can set us up to win.”

Johnson is used to being slept on, though. He didn’t have any college offers until January. During this season, he committed to Missouri State.

The future Bear is having a great season. Johnson has 26 total touchdowns, with over 1,600 rushing yards.

“I think it’s his vision, his patience and his balance, those three things. Great backs have speed; great backs have physicality and stuff like that,” Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick said. “He certainly possesses some of those things as well. But he’s a difference-maker when it comes to just having a feeling for running the ball. He’s pretty good.”

Not a bad superpower to have, especially as the Hornets try to capture a state championship.

That’s their goal. They’re taking it one game at a time.
