Tragedy nearly struck during No. 13 Miami’s 34–17 road win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, when a woman was toppled during a brutal sideline collision in the second quarter.

Leading 17–3 with less than two minutes before halftime, Hurricanes’ senior quarterback Carson Beck connected with freshman receiver Malachi Toney on a deep ball up the middle.

The 5-foot-11, 188-pound wideout bolted up the left side for a 56-yard gain before ultimately getting shoved out of bounds just ahead of the red zone — and sent barreling into a woman on the Miami sideline at full speed.

Holy shit! This woman came inches from death. 😳 pic.twitter.com/wvvy1ReQQm

The woman went flying back and ultimately stopped just inches in front of the concrete barrier and steel railing, narrowly avoiding a devastating impact.

Toney, horrified, rushed to the woman’s aide. Fortunately, she popped right back up to her feet, seemingly unscathed from the near horrifying accident.

Toney went on to have a season-best performance in the Hurricanes’ win, setting new career highs with 12 receptions and 146 yards, while also adding a game-high 16 yards on the ground.

He punctuated the team’s victory with a 20-yard touchdown reception with 20 seconds to go, hitting the “night night” celebration in front of the Virginia Tech faithful.

The end-zone connection marked Beck’s fourth passing score of the game, tying his season high.

The Hurricanes improved to a sparkling 9–2 with their third-straight win, while the Hokies fell to 3–8 with their third consecutive loss — their first defeat under newly hired head coach James Franklin.

Franklin, who was fired from Penn State in mid-October, joins a program set to receive a hefty $229 million investment into its athletic department over the next four years.

Maybe they should invest in some padded walls along the sidelines.
