INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. – The locksmith who was was critically injured after being shot while deputies tried to serve an eviction notice at a home near Vero Beach has died, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said Locksmith David Long, 76, died from his injuries just days after Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, was killed while they were responding to the home to evict Michael Halberstam from his mother’s home at her request.
Deputies said when they entered the home, Halberstam began indiscriminately firing his gun.

“Our hearts are broken once again by this tragic news. David Long was a resident of our community, a dedicated professional who was simply doing his job when he was caught in an unthinkable act of violence,” Sheriff Eric Flowers said.
The shooting happened at the Bermuda Club along State Road A1A, north of Vero Beach, near Wabasso Beach Park.
Another deputy, Tino Arizpe, who was shot in the shoulder during the incident was released from the hospital on Sunday, according to a news release.

“Deputy Arizpe was released from Lawnwood Hospital and is now continuing his recovery at home surrounded by support,” officials posted on social media.
On Saturday, officials reported that the shooter died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office said deputies had been called to the home seven times this month. Detectives say Halberstam had recently been fired and had made “terrible comments” on social media about his former workplace, and also made negative posts about the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.
“This is not someone who was on our radar, is not somebody that we were actively engaged with,” Flowers said. “This was a standard call for service.”
Also on Saturday, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that Sweeting-Mashkow has been posthumously promoted to sergeant “and will be addressed as Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow henceforth.” the sheriff’s office announced.
