Jacksonville police arrested a suspect in a double shooting on Nov. 22 that claimed the life of an 18-year-old man and injured another person at a Westside fast food restaurant.

Dawud Burritt, 28, faces multiple charges, including murder, in the shootings at Burger King, 7900 Blanding Blvd., the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced in a Nov. 23 news release.

Matthew Jackson died, and another man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries but is expected to recover, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Jackson “just took his ASVAB to serve this country as a Marine,” his mother Natasha Shonta Jackson told the Times-Union via a message on Facebook.

“My son was loved and loved others. … My son was a great kid,” she said.

Man fatally shot at Jacksonville Burger King restaurant

Police found Jackson and the second victim about 8:30 p.m., Nov. 22, in response to a report of a shooting at the restaurant, Sgt. Ash Saunders, a Sheriff’s Office homicide detective, said in a news release early Nov. 23.

Police provided emergency medical care until Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department first responders arrived and rushed the victims to the hospital, he said.

Saunders also said multiple people were detained and interviewed by detectives working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shootings and potential suspects..

The Sheriff’s Office said “we quickly identified Burritt as the gunman” and arrested him the morning of Nov. 23.

Burritt was jailed without bail on charges of second-degree murder and armed burglary at the Duval County Jail, according to Sheriff’s Office inmate records.
