Nov. 24 (UPI) — The man accused of fatally shooting a Florida deputy who was serving an eviction notice last week has died, authorities said over the weekend.
Indian River County Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 45, died Friday after being shot during an eviction in Vero Beach, only the second line-of-duty death in the agency’s 100-year history.
The suspected gunman was identified as Michael Halberstam, 37.
In a statement, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said Halberstam died at 3:41 p.m. EST Saturday.
Three deputies were serving the notice on Michael Halberstam, 37, in upscale Bermuda Club, when he allegedly grabbed a weapon and opened fire, killing Sweeting-Mashkow. Halberstam was wounded by return fire from the other two deputies.
The sheriff’s office on Saturday added that Sweeting-Mashkow had been posthumously promoted to sergeant.
“She will be addressed as Sergeant Sweeting-Mashkow henceforth,” it said in the brief statement.
“Thank you to all of our community for your continued support during these difficult times.”
Sweeting-Mashkow was a 25-year veteran with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
